#558 Genius Loci – Limoncello Spritz
63x77 cm | Filler, pine panel
About
This work was commissioned by Extrartis and DOM Art Residens and produced during a two-week residency at Relais La Rupe in Sorrento, Italy.
In this piece, I have spread filler across the surface using a scraper, allowing it to distribute naturally according to the properties of the material. I have made imprints in the filler using a bottle of Limoncello and a bottle of Prosecco, in addition to a Prosecco cork.
Sorrento is famous for its lemons and for its production of Limoncello liquor. On one of the first days of the residency, I tried the Limoncello Spritz - a drink very popular among the many tourists in the city. Later, while visiting the Bagni Regina Giovanna – a small lagoon that is connected to the sea through a natural tunnel – I found a Prosecco cork. As this is the other ingredient in the Limoncello Spritz, I got the idea to use the cork and some bottles of Limoncello and Prosecco we had at the residency to produce this work.
Spread
Spread is a compilation of work made by spreading the filler along the depth of the rim with a scrape. Letting a single action shape the result is reminiscent of Richard Serra's Verb List. It functioned as a kind of manifest for Serra's way of producing sculptures. To spread is on the list. It's about making art by exposing a matter to different types of forces.
