About
This sculpture is made from excess material from my artistic practice. I have always regarded artworks as documentation—or remains—of an artistic activity. In this sense, waste and leftover material serve a similar function to the artworks themselves. They, too, are traces and evidence of something that has taken place. You might call them the surplus of art, its repressed counterpart.
The cross-like form, with a bucket on top, reminds me of a marker on a shallow grave in the wilderness. Unlike us, matter is dead, yet we tend to animate it—to imagine it as something alive. The sculpture resembles a scarecrow, but I also associate it with Don Quixote, who imagined windmills as giants. He, too, imagined himself to be something other than he was: more noble, perhaps, his actual identity repressed through the act of imagination. This sculpture is made to match #576 Danse Macabre, a painting made by drawing with an empty filler bucket. But it can also function on its own.
